Life doesn’t always cooperate with therapy schedules. Winter weather, sudden illnesses, or exposure to something contagious can make it difficult — or inappropriate — to attend therapy sessions in person. The good news? Teletherapy may be an option on those days, and it’s worth a conversation.

Start With a Conversation

First and foremost, we encourage all clients to talk with their therapist if weather conditions or illness might affect an upcoming session. Together, you can decide whether teletherapy is clinically appropriate and effective for that day’s goals.

Teletherapy isn’t right for every situation — and that’s okay. The decision should always be based on:

  • Your specific therapy goals

  • Your child’s (or your own) ability to engage virtually

  • The type of service being provided

  • Your therapist’s professional judgment

If you and your therapist decide teletherapy is a good fit for that session, the next step is confirming coverage.

How to Check If Your Insurance Covers Teletherapy

Coverage can vary by insurance plan, so we recommend clients take a few minutes to verify benefits directly.

Step 1: Call the 800 Number on Your Insurance Card

When you call, let the representative know you are asking about teletherapy services.

Step 2: Ask These Key Questions

You can say something like:

“I’m checking to see if my plan covers teletherapy services for speech therapy and occupational therapy.”

Step 3: Reference the Appropriate CPT Codes

Providing CPT codes helps insurance representatives give you accurate information. You may want to ask specifically about coverage for the following:

Speech Therapy CPT Codes

  • 92507

  • 92526

Occupational Therapy CPT Codes (commonly used)

  • 97530

  • 97112

  • 97535

  • 97110

Ask whether these services are covered when delivered via teletherapy, and if there are any limitations, copays, or prior authorization requirements.

Why This Matters

Confirming coverage ahead of time helps avoid surprises and ensures continuity of care — even when life throws curveballs like snowstorms or stomach bugs. Teletherapy can be a flexible, effective option when used thoughtfully and appropriately.
