Make Language Visual

Language needs to be experienced to be understood as it is not sensory information.

Processing information and comprehension of language can be enhanced through visual imagery. For example, to add details to a map of your neighborhood, you might:

  • Visualize the layout of streets and landmarks in your mind first Include specific buildings, trees, or unique features Imagine the scale and relative distances between different locations Commonly “ignored” or difficult-to-follow directions in your home could be: Vague instructions like “over there” or “near that thing” Complex sequences such as “third door on the left after the big mirror” Assumptions about prior knowledge, like assuming everyone knows where an item is kept To make a more complete mental picture and enhance understanding: Use specific and descriptive language to replace vague terms Break down complex directions into simpler steps Provide context or cues to help visualize the intended outcome
