Labels & Respect

Pause, Reframe, Change

Reflect on the labels that have been used to describe you and your child. Consider the labels you would like others to know about you and what you give yourself. Look at both the positive and negative labels used.

  • What labels have people used to describe you?
  • What labels do you give yourself?
  • What labels have you used to describe your child?

Explore the labels others have used for your child and those that your child uses for themselves.

  • What labels have others used to describe your child?
  • What labels have you heard your child use for themselves?

After considering these labels, think about how you can adjust your language and thinking in a more positive way, both for yourself and your child. Practice the following: PAUSE when labeling either yourself or your child. REFRAME the labels by viewing them in a more positive light. CHANGE how you address and think about yourself and your child. For example, reevaluate the labels you use for your child and how you can reframe them positively. Identify how you can implement these changes in your interactions.
